Our School

Harpeth Valley Hound Dogs

Harpeth Valley Elementary School has been recognized by the state of Tennessee as a Reward School. This status means HVES is one of the top performing schools in the state.

Additionally, the school was also able to meet our double AMO (annual measurable objectives), or goals set by the state.

Great work by our teachers, students, staff, and families!

Harpeth Valley prides itself on achieving high academic standards for all students. For the 2013-2014 and 2018-2019 school years, Harpeth Valley was recognized as a Reward school by the state of Tennessee, and we have ranked among the top elementary schools in the district.  For the last four years, Harpeth Valley has been named a Model School of Recognition for our implementation of our Positive Behavior Supports program.

Harpeth Valley teachers are masters of their craft, constantly looking for new and innovative ways to enrich the curriculum and strengthen their instructional skills. They put student success and love of learning at the forefront of each day. But they don't act alone-parents are not only supportive of Harpeth Valley's enriched curriculum, but they also have ample opportunity to participate, whether directly in our classrooms or through a variety of active PTO committees.

Harpeth Valley offers a wide range of opportunities to extend learning beyond the standard Tennessee state curriculum. The PTO utilizes the school garden to host a Garden Club after school, and classroom teachers also incorporate the school garden into classroom lessons. Each year our 4th-grade students present the "Wax Museum," the culmination of an extensive study of an important historical figure chosen by the student. Students dress up as their historical figure and share information in a first-person account. Students also participate in Accelerated Reader as a means to encourage goal setting and increase their love of reading. Harpeth Valley also offers Encore, the district's program for gifted and talented learners.

Transitioning to K to 5th Grade

As part of the Metro Schools ReimaginED initiative, MNPS intends to move to a kindergarten through 5th grade model of elementary school instruction, in line with most districts across the state and country. We successfully launched this process in the 2021-22 school year with several schools and have received a lot of positive feedback from families and school administrators in support of the transition.

This transition will occur at Harpeth Valley in the 2023-24 school year. This means that 4th grade students at Harpeth Valley Elementary will be returning next year for 5th grade. MNPS data show 5th-grade students who remain in the elementary setting outperform their peers who are in a middle school setting, and this change will better align MNPS grade levels with state grade band curriculum standards. Additionally, previous engagement efforts show that MNPS parents would like their 5th-grade students to remain in the elementary setting.

Rising 5th graders at Harpeth Valley Elementary will automatically be enrolled for the upcoming school year, so nothing is required on your part. However, if you are interested in an academic magnet or other optional middle school, we suggest you consider applying this year as we cannot guarantee 6th grade seats will be available in the 2024-25 school year.

The optional school's application process will open later in January 2023.
